How Is Leighton Vander Esch Absent from the Pro Bowl Ballot?

The Dallas Cowboys sure scored big on their 2018 first-round pick, Leighton Vander Esch. At first, many Cowboys fans questioned the selection of the Boise State linebacker. While many assumed that the Cowboys would take a wide receiver to help add to their struggling offense, the team loaded up on their defense by taking Vander Esch.
How did their first pick fare so far in 2018 season? Well, if you watch him on gameday, you would surely be impressed. And if you look at his 76 combination tackles, and an interception, you can probably assume that this kid has a bright future ahead of him. With Cowboys veteran linebacker Sean Lee struggling to stay healthy, Vander Esch has already proven to be a tremendous backup, that will soon have the starting position all locked up.
Despite Vander Esch’s significant progress in 2018 though, he’s still absent from the Pro Bowl ballot. How’s that possible? Just as the voting opened up this week, many were confused to see three other Cowboys’ linebackers on the ballot. But the rookie has not been made available for voting within the first few days. And the funniest part about it all? He has just been named Defensive Player of the Week for Week 10.
How Is He out on the Pro Bowl?

Before Week 10, Vander Esch was still doing very well. But as he thrived on a primetime stage on the road against a divisional opponent, Vander Esch has quickly become a favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Will he stay consistent? That remains to be seen. But if we are looking at his production from the beginning of the season until now, Vander Esch definitely has lived up to his draft day hype.
Now, the NFL needs to do the right thing and put the first-rounder on the ballot. It doesn’t really make sense how Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith are available for collecting votes, but the rookie isn’t. At this point, it would be difficult for Vander Esch to make it even if he was made available, as voting has been made available for about a day now.

Kentucky Basketball: Starters and Roster Against North Dakota

Every game is a big game for the Kentucky Wildcats–especially coming off of a humiliating opening-night loss to Duke and a middling showing against Southern Illinois last week–but tonight the team has the chance to get a victory over North Dakota for the first time in school history.

North Dakota is the only state we do not have a victory over in school history. Let's change that tonight and make it 50 for 50.
— Kentucky Basketball (@KentuckyMBB) November 14, 2018

A milestone like that, however small in the grand scheme of things, could be just the confidence booster the team needs after its less-than-ideal start to the season. Head coach John Calipari is still experimenting with lineups and rotations, but it’s safe to say that the team is learning and improving through the early-season hiccups.
Calipari went with the starting lineup of Quickley, Herro, Johnson, Washington, and Travis for last week’s win over Southern Illinois, and that may be what he goes with again tonight.
Jemarl Baker may also find his way onto the court for his UK debut–the redshirt freshman was dressed and warming up with the team last week, though he didn’t play against SIU.

Good to see Jemarl Baker dressed out. Hope we get to see him check in and play tonight. #SIUvsUK pic.twitter.com/vjvEr8vvBf
— Keith Farmer (@KeithFarmer18) November 10, 2018

All that being said, here’s what the Wildcats’ lineup could look like for tonight–assuming Calipari is still playing with his ideal starting five:

Projected Starting Lineup for Kentucky vs North Dakota
PG: Immanuel Quickley
SG: Quade Green
SF: Keldon Johnson
PF: PJ Washington
C: Reid Travis
Quickley had a good showing against SIU with 15 points in his starting role, and Quade Green came off the bench and contributed 14 along with a team-high 3 assists.
Calipari could reward Green for that with his first start of the season, and Keldon Johnson has earned his place in the lineup as the only UK player to have scored in double figures in both games thus far.
Expect to see the same roster you’ve seen in the first two matchups, with the possible addition of Baker for his Kentucky debut.
The two teams will face off tonight at Rupp Arena at 9 pm CST.

Allyn Pierce, Camp Fire Hero: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Allyn Pierce lives in Paradise, California. Pierce is a nurse and intensive care unit manager at his local hospital so he helps others daily and is likely a hero to some. But five days ago, his bravery and astonishing heroics helped to save a hospital full of patients.
Pierce drove through fire, right through the fire with flames surrounding him burning his truck. He recorded a goodbye video for his family as he was sure he’d not make it. But he did and managed to go back to the hospital and again, save people’s lives.
As reported by The New York Times, and told too in series of tweets by Times journalist Jack Nicas, and through Pierce’s Instagram story, this is the life-affirming tale of real heroism in the face of what felt a certain death.

Here's the crazy story of just one of the many heroes in Paradise, the town destroyed by California's deadliest fire ever. His name is Allyn Pierce, and he's the badass nurse who drove this truck through the flames. pic.twitter.com/xAL7zRf34H
— Jack Nicas (@jacknicas) November 13, 2018

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Pierce Runs the ICU at Adventist Health. Before the Camp Fire Overtook Paradise, He & Staff Evacuated Patients. Then he Drove Away to Safety. Or so he Thought

After the evacuation of the hospital, Pierce and two co-workers got in his truck to drive away from the fire and to safety. Like many others. But soon found themselves inside fire. “Flames licked at the side of his truck, and as Allyn watched other cars catch fire, he thought his was next.”

Nicas reported that Pierce “held his coat against the window – a futile guard from the intense heat – and put on Peter Gabriel’s ‘In Your Eyes’ to calm himself. He recorded a goodbye message to his family: ‘Just in case this doesn’t work out, I want you to know I really tried to make it out.’”

2. Through the Flames & Smoke & Ash, a Bulldozer Appears to Clear a Path to Safety

“Suddenly a bulldozer appeared & knocked a burning truck next to him out of the way. There was some room to maneuver. But instead of going forward toward safety, he turned around & drove back into the heart of Paradise…” Nicas reported.
Pierce shared images of his truck, a Toyota Tundra, which sustained damage but kept going. He believes the truck saved his and his colleagues’ lives.
“Here’s my @toyotausa commercial. This truck literally saved my life today. My little town of Paradise was literally burning down around me and @the_pandra got me to safety where I could help others…twice. #campfire #perfectmarshmellow #meltedplastics #buttecountyfire #sema2019 thanks to the fire fighters, law enforcement and my fellow healthcare workers for the work we all did getting the hospital evacuated and our patients to safety.”

3. Pierce, Having Survived Through a Wall of Fire, Ends up Back at the Hospital Where Injured Residents Had Flocked

The road out of the fire led him back to his hospital where some Paradise residents had gone seeking help.
“Now all of us are like, ‘Oh, this is what we do,’” Nicas reported Pierce as saying. “We’re terrible at burning to death, but we’re amazing at taking care of people.”
Nicas reported that physicians, nurses, EMTs and police set up a triage in the parking lot of Adventist Health. “They broke into the hospital for gurneys, oxygen tanks & other gear & quickly went to work, treating about two dozen people while the fire raged around them.”
Soon, the hospital was ablaze.
“The team quickly relocated the patients 100 yards away to the hospital’s helipad. Eventually authorities cleared a path to safety, so they loaded up the victims & drove out in a caravan. Everyone made it out safely.”

Nicas reported Pierce emphasized the rescue was a “massive group effort — and that they weren’t heroes.”
“This is what we do,” Nicas quoted Pierce. “Any nurse, any healthcare worker, any cop, they were there and they all did their jobs.”

4. Pierce Boasted His Beloved Toyota Dubbed ‘The Pandra’ Was the Real Hero. Toyota Responded

People from around the world commented on Pierce’s Instagram, many saying they were now buying a Toyota. But Toyota USA, sans brouhaha or self-promotion, quietly jumped on the thread and told Pierce he’d be getting a new truck.
“We are humbled you’d risk your life and Toyota Tundra to drive people to safety. Don’t worry about your truck, we’re honored to get you a new one!”

The comments on Pierce’s Instagram devoted to his truck praised the nurse for his bravery and Toyota for dong the right thing without fanfare.
“Toyota, such a standup move to be so kind and generous to somebody going through the worst week of his life. So impressive that you reached out to this gentleman & are not posting the story on your own socials (yet). Very classy move to do this for the right reasons and not using it as a manipulative marketing ploy. Bravo.”

“Absolutely amazing all together, kudos to the amazing people at @toyotausa for extending help and to all the other awesome people doing what they can. Nice to see there’s still good in this world. My heart truly goes out to you and those affected by this tragedy. May god be with you all in these tough times. And to all the people who posted trying to get a free hand out in here…. you should be ashamed of yourselves. Many risked their lives during this inferno and instead of posting positive vibes and kind words, you’re trying to get attention for a freebie. @the_pandra my hats off to you god bless.”

5. Piece & His Family Lost Everything. A GoFundMe Was Created to Help the Family

Pierce is a humble guy. He admitted how hard it was for him to ask for help. Not uncommon in people who are accustomed to giving.
“I struggled posting this, but with my house gone and my hospital… I don’t know where my job sits. I’m gonna swallow my pride and post this GoFundMe that a kind person in Chico set up for us. This is the only legit GoFundMe that is set up for us. Separately, there is a Plum Fund that has been set up by friends, “Pierce Family Fire Fund.” This is only for those that want to donate. We will be fine, it will all work out, because if has to.”
The GoFundMe had a goal of $15,000. At the time this post was published, it had reached more than $22,000.
“Help this hero rebuild. His family lost their home in the Paradise CA fires,” the GoFundMe reads. “I saw this truck at our hospital this morning, then found his post on his IG @the_pandra shuttled patients and co-workers TWICE from the crazy #campfire in paradise CA. What an amazing story! YES those are burn marks on the truck and melted head/tail lights, the wheel wells are gone. Toyota USA this beats the pants off of any other commercial for any truck. Just his picture right here. This guy whoever he is, is a true #hero”

Watch Fight Between Youth Hockey Coach, Parent That Led To Arrest

John Morea has set a bad example for hockey players of all ages.
Police arrested the head coach of the New Jersey Colonials 14-under bantam team Oct. 28, one day after he fought a parent of one of his players after a game, according to NJ Advanced Media’s Joseph Atmonavage. Surveillance video shows Morea, 29, rushing into his team’s home ice rink in Morristown, N.J., and throwing a flurry of punches at another man for unknown reasons.

Morea reportedly faces a litany of charges stemming from his arrest: simple assault at a youth sporting event; threatening to kill; attempting to cause bodily injury to another and driving after having his license suspended or revoked.
Morea’s father, Thomas, also was arrested in connection to the postgame fight. He faces charges of simple assault at a youth sporting event and attempting to cause bodily injury to another.

Rick Pitino ‘Intrigued’ by Timberwolves Coaching Job If Tom Thibodeau Is Fired

Few if any people bought Rick Pitino’s September assertion that he was “finished coaching.” So it should surprise no one that he’s reportedly “intrigued” by the idea of taking over on the sidelines for the Minnesota Timberwolves, should the team let current head coach and president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau go, according to Get More Sports’ Chris Sheridan.

From what I am hearing, if @Timberwolves decide to fire Tom Thibodeau and Scott Layden sooner rather than later, @RealPitino would be intrigued by the job. His son coaches the @GoldenGophers, so it makes sense on that level.
— Chris Sheridan (@sheridanhoops) November 14, 2018

The University of Louisville fired Pitino in October 2017 after the head coach was implicated in a pay-to-play scandal involving top-shelf recruit Brian Bowen.
It was his third scandal. In 2009, he announced he was the target of an extortion attempt, which stemmed from an affair he had with the wife of the team’s equipment manager in 2003. Pitino admitted to having intercourse with the woman in a Louisville restaurant and paying $3,000 for her to have an abortion. She was convicted and found guilty of extortion and lying to federal agents.
In 2014, sex workers accused the program of providing escorts for players and recruits. As a result, the NCAA vacated Louisville’s 2013 national championship.

While the rarities for these cosmetics have not been revealed, we do know the names for the different skins. Starting from the top row and working out way down the different characters are called: Riot, Castor, Elmira, Maki Master, and Taro. Remember, these have not been released yet, so nothing is finalized. There’s a chance that Epic Games could adjust certain aspects of these outfits.

With only two weeks left in Season 6, these will probably be the last new skins until Season 7 arrives. If you have been putting off finishing the challenges, now is the time to start knocking them out. Thankfully, many of them are very easy to complete – especially in the larger modes such as Disco Domination or Food Fight.

Carmelo Anthony’s Career Might Be Finished, Says Byron Scott

When will the Carmelo Anthony drama end? It’s been going on for years now, except for the last three seasons it’s been with a different team. A few years back, Anthony needed out of his situation with the New York Knicks as nothing seemed to be going right anymore. Then, Anthony went to the Oklahoma City Thunder where he was supposed to be an essential piece to their “Big 3.” That failed as well.
Now, Anthony is on the Houston Rockets roster where he was asked to come off of the bench, and from the jump, you could tell this stint was not going to be successful. What do you know? About a month into the 2018 season and Carmelo Anthony is going to be traded/released any day now. The question is though, will teams take the risk of snagging Anthony if/ and when he becomes available?
There were a few rumored teams to have an interest in Carmelo Anthony. Some teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, the Los Angeles Lakers, etc. The usual suspects for new players right now, basically. But as the days get closer to Carmelo becoming available, it seems like a lot of teams are going to be hesitant, which makes sense. He doesn’t want a minimal role, but he doesn’t offer enough to anybody to be a starting player. Carmelo Anthony is no longer the star he once was, and everybody knows it. Will he bounce back with a new team? Or is he finished?
A Former Coach Speaks out on the Topic

If you ask former NBA coach, Byron Scott, he will tell you that he’s not sure that Carmelo Anthony will bounce back. While Scott believes that Carmelo Anthony can still play reasonably well, he understands how tough it is going to be for the 34-year-old, ten-time All-Star to make a difference on a team nowadays.
In the eyes of Scott, Carmelo doesn’t fit in with teams trying to rebuild with younger players, and he also won’t fit in with a team that gets “up and down on the floor.” Basically, Melo would have to play with a bunch of established veterans already, somewhere like, you know, the Houston Rockets? It’s funny, but it’s true. At this point, it’s becoming evident that Melo’s days may be over.

Will Jimmy Butler Break Markelle Fultz?

One of the most fascinating things about the blockbuster Jimmy Butler trade–besides, well, all of it–is how the addition of the contentious former Timberwolves player will affect the 76ers’ young and unique core. Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz, especially, are notorious for being unable and unwilling to shoot the ball–and Butler is notorious for never letting teammates off the hook.
Fultz, specifically has been catching flak for moments like this, where he seemingly forgets how to shoot at all:

[email protected] would trade last year's No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz if he were the 76ers. pic.twitter.com/MuVXfpqffg
— ESPN (@espn) November 13, 2018

The young player’s confidence seems to be at an all-time low–he’s not enjoying himself, he’s barely functioning on the court, and he’s embroiled in off-the-court drama related to it all.
That being said, Fultz is somehow still somewhat effective for the Sixers even without a shot or confidence. He’s averaging 9 points per game, which isn’t negligible, and he still has a good ability to drive and dish. But will that be enough for Jimmy Butler?

The Internet has Exploded with Butler/Fultz Memes
There has been an abundance of memes poking fun at how Butler, who is notorious for bullying young teammates, might potentially annoy Ben Simmons and straight-up break struggling 76ers guard Markelle Fultz for not being able to shoot the ball.
As stories of in-practice blowups have been commonplace, it’s not hard to imagine a response like this from Fultz after a few with Butler:

Markelle Fultz after one practice with Jimmy Butler pic.twitter.com/pgpZYFZcyW
— Skippa DeFilippo (@jawnbrown) November 10, 2018

And Butler is likely to want to whip a few people into shape after encountering the unique personalities that make up the core of the franchise:

When Jimmy Butler walks into his first Sixers practice and sees Embiid watching anime, Simmons DMing Instagram models and Fultz crying in a corner pic.twitter.com/aZFv49fXVz
— Tribune of the Plebs (@Handsome_Jake_) November 10, 2018

But maybe, just maybe, a little push from Butler is all Fultz needs to start shooting like this:

Markelle Fultz after getting yelled at by Jimmy Butler pic.twitter.com/9YsTIyuQ9Q
— Charkelle (@SnowmanEmbiid) November 10, 2018

More likely, though, it’ll go something like this:

— Complex Sports (@ComplexSports) November 10, 2018

Markelle Fultz should be in all of our prayers:

Y’all pray for Markelle Fultz… Jimmy Butler is going to tear this boy to shreds 😂 pic.twitter.com/mkZ4fNJjNc
— Complex Sports (@ComplexSports) November 13, 2018

No Trouble Yet
In his press conference yesterday, Butler called Fultz “a talented young player” and had nothing bad to say.

Laura Avila: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Laura Avila, a real estate agent from Dallas, is unlikely to wake from a coma after traveling to Mexico for a nose job, her fiance says. Avila was placed under anesthesia at RinoCenter in Ciudad Juarez on October 30, reports ABC Dallas. Her fiance, Enrique Cruz, told the station that Avila is not likely to wake from her coma. The ABC report quotes Avila’s sister, Angie, as saying, “The price of course compared to those in the U.S. was less than a third.” The down payment for the surgery was $138, the total cost is not known at this point.
Here’s what you need to know:

1. It Was Only After the Nose Surgery Clinic Called a Doctor That Avila’s Family Was Told She Had Suffered a Heart Attack

Enrique Cruz told ABC Dallas that the anesthesia was administered by a clinic staffer. Cruz said that as the day wore on, Cruz said, “I was kind of getting upset and worried because they would not let me see her or anything.” Clinic staff told Cruz that Avila’s blood pressure had dropped and that they could not perform the nose surgery. Later, the clinic called a doctor, Cruz said, “That’s when they told us, “Oh, by the way she had a cardiac arrest.”
A friend of Avila’s, Liz Hernandez, told the Dallas Morning News, “They put the anesthesia in her spine, instead of intravenously.” Hernandez also said that Avila cannot be classified as “brain-dead” but that Avila “suffered severe brain damage; the degree of the injury is not known.”

2. Avila’s Mexican Treatment Records Are Being Held Hostage as Her Bills Have Not Been Paid
Facebook/Laura AvilaAvila pictured with her fiance in November 2016.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Avila was moved from the clinic to a local hospital, where she remained for four days. Her family sought to move Avila to a hospital in the U.S. but were denied as her bill had not been paid at the hospital. Angie Avila told WFAA, “The hospital basically held us hostage because we wouldn’t pay the full amount.”
Facebook/Laura Avila
Eventually, Avila’s family were able to move her to a hospital in El Paso, Texas. It was in the U.S. where doctors confirmed that Avila had suffered “severe brain damage so much so that she will never be our Laura again… They told us she would never be able to walk or eat for herself again or speak,” Angie Avila told WFAA. Angie Avila also said that the hospital in Mexico has refused to release her sister’s medical treatment records.

3. Her Family Wants to Move Her to Dallas But Have Been Refused From Local Hospitals Because Avila Does Not Have Insurance
Facebook/Laura Avila
ABC Dallas reports that Avila’s family is trying to get her moved to a hospital in the Dallas-area. Her fiance said, “Right now we are praying for a miracle. Really we want a second opinion.” Her family added that three major hospitals in Dallas have refused Avila because of her lack of insurance. A Dallas attorney, Larry Friedman, is looking into taking legal action on behalf of Avila and her family, reports WFAA. The Morning News report adds that Friedman is also seeking to retrieve Avila’s medical records in Mexico.

4. In Addition to Her Real Estate Career, Avila Is Also a Travel & Food Blogger
Facebook/Laura Avila
Avila writes on her Instagram bio that she is a blogger on Food, Dallas and traveling. Avila adds the quote, “Forever is composted of NOW,” on her profile. According to Avila’s LinkedIn page, she has worked for various realty companies in the Dallas-area since 2016. Avila previously worked in sales and marketing in the pharmaceutical industry. Avila is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso. Avila has been a volunteer for breast cancer awareness, the American Cancer Society and Latinitas, the latter being a group that helps Hispanic women find scholarships and mentorships.

5. A Go Fund Me Page for Avila Has Raised Over $70,000
Go Fund Me/Laura Avila
According to a Go Fund Me page that has been set up for Avila, over $70,000 of a $150,000 goal. The page was set up by Avila’s sister who writes, “My sister Laura Avila has endured a tragedy that has been very heavy on our family. I have known my sister to be a giver since I came to this planet. I watched my sister give support and love to my parents who tried giving us a life in Texas. Laura has given me a firm, unconditional love as a sister and a friend to accomplish dreams and travel the world. I watched her give herself so openly to people in her friendship, counseling, laughter, wit, business genius and work ethic.” She goes on, “Without Laura, I would not be where I am today. She is my sister, a second mom to me, my best friend, and my #1 fan. She has always taken care of me, supported me, encouraged me, and believed in me–something she does for all the people she loves.”
